The era of “La Belle Epoque” historically represented the very height of beauty and romantic expressionism. This golden age is being revisited as one of the very latest looks in bathroom renovation, often reinterpreted as the classic “Hamptons” style, and it’s a different approach to modern bathroom design than typically taken.
WHO Bathroom Warehouse was there for Bryce and Christine K., of Hope Island on the Gold Coast, after they added a large rear extension to their home for an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area to flow out onto the deck, pool and landscaped garden area. This new extension would allow them to turn their former dining room, more towards the middle of their home’s layout and only rarely used, into a family bathroom of grand proportions. Their former main bathroom, sharing one wall with the former dining room, had its doorway moved and interior reconfigured so that it would become both the ensuite and walk-in wardrobe for an adjacent bedroom. These additional changes meant that friends and family from interstate, holidaying as guests, could be accommodated with ample storage and the privacy of their own bathroom.
“We wanted to create a beautiful new main bathroom with quality features that wouldn’t date. We also wanted to get right away from the fully tiled, clinical look that you see everywhere. We wanted our bathroom to be more like a real room, and for it to look furnished, rather than fitted out with fixtures,” Christine said. “We saw this gorgeous clawfoot bath in WHO’s showroom. We knew straight away that this would be the centrepiece of the look we wanted. Our WHO consultant mentioned The Hamptons as a style we could go for. With a bit of advice on things, like if it was okay to use wallpaper in the bathroom, the whole look started coming together. We couldn’t be happier with the result. We love it.”
The cool lustre of pale grey-grained white marble is warmed by walls of half-height wainscoting in white, making a very homely-feeling alternative to tiled walls in areas where persistent moisture isn’t an issue. Subtle self-striped wallpaper in elegant mid-grey is echoed by the fabric of roman blinds and custom-made cushion upholstery on the window seat, which also conceals the storage of fresh towels.
At the heart of this beautiful bathroom is the Albert freestanding clawfoot bath (by Olivia Ellen) in classic white, its characterful feet in sparkling silver tones drawing welcome attention. Albert is filled by the stunning Samantha deluxe floorstanding bath filler (by Banff) with optional hand-held shower head and dual mixers for individual flow control.
The twin vanity units achieve the home-owners’ desire for a more furnished look. The result is very special indeed. WHO’s mix-and-match vanity range offers more than 2,000 combinations of vanity units (wall-mounted or floorstanding like this gorgeous example). Elite double-drawer vanity units with Hampton drawer facings and handles are installed on either side of the Albert bath, and show more of their versatility by turning into a matching window seat.
The stately bulkhead appearance is delivered by a series of mirrored cabinets above the bath and basins, with smart LED lighting over the basins. The two WB-526 basins are deep, and mounted underneath the benchtops for a very sleek profile. Elegant cornices above the mirrored cabinets were a clever way to make a stunning design statement out of a few standard shaving cabinets.
“We couldn’t believe the prices for all of the luxury fittings – it was a pleasant surprise. With the money we saved by shopping at WHO, we were able to splash out on real marble finishes, stunning wallpaper, and the custom-made blinds and cushion,” Christine said.
“Our main bathroom was okay before but nothing special. Adding the extension out the back gave us the opportunity to do something more with our old formal dining room, which we hardly ever used anyway. Our new main bathroom is very functional for day-to-day family use but also really romantic. It’s one of the most beautiful rooms in our home. Now when visitors open the door to our bathroom, they literally swoon.”
